Hello! I am Britta Möller (1973, Germany), an artist and graphic designer based in Amsterdam. For more than twenty years, I worked in the music and cultural sector, creating visual concepts, books, magazines, and identities for artists, festivals, and cultural organisations. For a long time, I believed my role was to shape and support the creativity of others. Until slowly, something shifted. What followed was not a conscious decision to become an artist, but a slow process of uncovering something that had been present underneath everything all along. The work I make now emerges somewhere between intuition and resistance, certainty and uncertainty. Often, it feels less like I am trying to shape an outcome, and more like I am following something I do not fully understand yet. My career began in 1998, when I co-founded the design studio Maslow. Working with clients such as Amsterdam Dance Event, I spent many years creating visual identities, publications, and books within the music and cultural sector. In 2013, I designed the 600-page coffee table book Mary Go Wild — 25 Years of Dance in the Netherlands, a Gesamtkunstwerk documenting the history of Dutch dance music, which received the Pop Media Prize. Following this, in 2014, I co-founded the Mary Go Wild platform, including a store on the Zeedijk in Amsterdam and a publishing house that produced works such as Awakenings — 20 Years of Techno, Celebrate Life — The Story of ID&T, This Is My Church by Rutger Geerling, and Thunderdome — 25 Years of Hardcore. In 2020, the music and events industry came to an abrupt standstill. With it, my work as a designer disappeared. Since 2015, I have been working at A Lab, a creative hub in the center of Amsterdam. During the silence of the pandemic period, a space emerged there that I had never allowed myself before. Without commissions. Without deadlines. I started painting. After 25 years of shaping other people’s stories and identities, I became aware that I no longer knew what was truly mine. Who I was. What I actually wanted. While painting, something happened that I could neither control nor invent. For the first time in a long while, I experienced flow again — a sense of direction without a plan. I still work without knowing where it will lead. Somehow, it reveals itself in its own time. Slowly, my way of working shifted from trying to direct the process to allowing it to unfold. Transformation cannot be forced. It happens quietly — whether we are ready for it or not. Let it.

I never begin with a clear image of what I want to make. Curiosity is what keeps pulling me back.
I create because I want to see what happens.

Painting asks for a different kind of acceptance than digital work. You cannot save ten versions and decide later which one was right. Every mark changes the work permanently.

Making art has shown me how deeply attached I was to perfection. Allowing imperfections to remain visible still feels vulnerable.

I discovered that style is connected to the way your hands move — something you cannot fully control, like dancing. The body already knows before the mind understands.

After years of directing art, I’m learning what happens when I let art direct me instead. Design often asked me to lead, while painting asks me to follow.

Through discovering my own art, I slowly began recognizing that everyone carries a unique form of creativity within them. Not only through painting or music, but in the way someone listens, nurtures, teaches, connects, or tells stories.
